Editorial design for FD
Het Financieele Dagblad
I regularly did editorial design (double-page) infographic for the Saturday supplement of the FD, called Futures. The example above is a visualization of the development of the level of education in various countries since 1830. That year was set as a starting point because at that time education was being recognized in more and more places as a factor of social importance and was no longer reserved for the elite. Below is the chart for the Netherlands.
Compared to China the differences are striking. Obviously the emancipation of the majority of the population regarding education sets of in a much later stage. But the speed of the development is remarkable. Check out China’s graph below.
Editorial design is great because it transforms written content into visually engaging experiences that enhance communication. Through thoughtful layout, typography, and imagery, it guides the reader’s eye, making complex information more digestible and enjoyable. Good editorial design balances aesthetics with functionality, ensuring that the content is both informative and visually appealing. It creates a cohesive narrative, turning pages into a seamless journey. Whether in magazines, books, or digital media, editorial design plays a crucial role in storytelling, capturing attention, and enhancing the overall reader experience, making information not just accessible, but memorable.
