If climate change is the biggest threat humanity has ever faced, then why are we doing so little? Will current political shifts make it worse or better? And where do we go from here? Drawing on the latest climate science, Jelmer Mommers helps you find hope in the midst of the climate crisis. He describes how we got here, what possible futures await us, and how you can help to truly make a difference. Creating infographics for How Are We Going to Explain This? by Jelmer Mommers was both challenging and rewarding. The book’s focus on climate change and its urgent message...

Together with Make Motion I made an animation for architecture agency Buro Kade to present their invention MONADS. The idea behind it is that cities offer plenty of space for intensive living, working and recreation. Yet we see the built environment expanding beyond the boundaries of cities and towns. In the same year that Het Parool was named European Newspaper of the Year, one of my infographics in the newspaper was also awarded the title of Best Infographic in a European Newspaper in 2016. The infographic that I made together with my colleague Laura van der Bijl shows the increase of dining options in Amsterdam with the simultaneously increasing number of gyms. ...

In 2017, Het Parool was awarded the title of European Newspaper of the Year for a year. As designers and image editors of the newspaper, we were of course extremely honored and surprised. Het Parool is a relatively small newspaper with a circulation of approximately 60,000 and focused on Amsterdam, a city with approximately 800,000 inhabitants. The jury report praised the unorthodox approach with an almost magazine-like layout. Personally, I was of course also pleased that two of my designs were highlighted in the report. This concerns the front page about refugees and the spread about Sail.  Reason enough to...

On April 22, 2017, Het Parool was named World's Best Designed Newspaper. The prize was presented during the annual meeting of the Society for News Design, an international umbrella organization of designers and journalists. The German newspaper Die Zeit received the same prize. Other nominated newspapers included The New York Times, The Guardian and The Washington Post – a total of 170 newspapers submitted from all parts of the world. The jury praised Het Parool on Friday night in the Nascar Hall of Fame in the American city of Charlotte for 'an enchanting design that makes news stories tempting to...
