Working as a designer on the explainer video from NOSop3 about the malpractices with algorithms at the Governmental Education Institution DUO was both eye-opening and challenging. The project aimed to shed light on the biases and ethical concerns surrounding the algorithms used by DUO in processes like student financial aid, loan distribution, and academic performance evaluation. My role involved creating graphics and visuals that clearly illustrated these complex issues, making them understandable to a wide audience.
One of the main challenges was visually representing abstract concepts like algorithmic bias and discrimination. I had to find creative ways to visualize how algorithms, despite being designed to be impartial, can unintentionally perpetuate inequalities based on historical data or flawed assumptions. This required in-depth research into how algorithms work, as well as a careful balance of clarity and sensitivity to the issues at hand.
I worked closely with the scriptwriters and subject matter experts to ensure the visuals were both accurate and impactful. The final graphics included charts, icons, and animations that depicted the consequences of algorithmic biases in an accessible way. It was a deeply rewarding experience, as I was able to contribute to raising awareness about important social issues, while honing my skills in creating visuals.
Collaboration was at the core of the project. I worked with fellow designer Luka van Diepen who set the initial visual style for the video. This included establishing a color palette, typography, and overall aesthetic that would make the video both visually engaging and consistent with the NOSop3 brand. His strong conceptual approach laid the foundation, allowing us to build a cohesive visual language throughout the video.
The collaboration between us was crucial in ensuring the video was not only aesthetically cohesive but also accurate and impactful. We continually reviewed and iterated on each design, refining our approach to effectively communicate the issues at hand. Working alongside such a talented designer taught me a lot about the power of teamwork in creating a compelling, informative visual narrative. The final result was a successful blend of creativity, clarity, and social awareness, helping to illuminate the real-world consequences of biased algorithms.
