For an article for the Correspondent by Tamar Stelling, I made an infographic about Boyan Slat’s plastic catcher. Below is a passage from Tamar’s article:
‘Of course, The Ocean Cleanup has previously thought about the consequences of gigantic plastic catchers in the sea. For every large construction project that you want to help into the world – think: golf course, wind farm, airport or livestock farm – governments require an environmental impact assessment. A report that explains what consequences a project can have on nature. The Ocean Cleanup also published such a report in July 2018. Pages long, it discusses the possible impact on whales, dolphins, seals and seabirds. Conclusion: there is no impact. The report thus illustrates once again how common it is to only think about vertebrates – 2 percent of the animal species on earth – and to completely ignore the rest. Because even in the sea, the greatest biodiversity consists of jellyfish and other invertebrate, gelatinous, fragile creatures that mostly float around passively. What is the impact on that?’
